CHAPTER TEN

The next morning, I woke up and looked around, trying to get my bearings. Where was I? I stretched and hit the wall. Ouch. Suddenly everything from the night before came back to me. I jumped up and looked in the mirror. Yep, still Jared. And he was still good-looking. Or I was. Or something. This was too confusing.

Not wanting to shower for obvious reasons—I closed my eyes when I went to the bathroom—I went to the closet to find some clothes. No luck, and it probably wasn’t a good idea to wear a suit and tie to school. After a quick search through his dresser, I pulled out the least wrinkled shirt and jeans I could find and threw them on. I sniffed my shirt and shrugged, figuring I smelled fine. I was a guy, after all.

Jared’s bag was sitting in the corner, so I picked it up and left the room, hoping he’d done his homework before he’d gone to my house the day before. Ugh, I hoped he’d done my homework last night, since I never got a chance. Out in the hallway, I caught the smell of pancakes and eggs. Now this was something I could enjoy. My mom never had time to make anything in the morning. I clomped down the stairs and into the kitchen.

Jared’s mom looked at me in surprise. “I thought you’d left already. Are you sure you’re okay?” She felt my forehead.

“Of course, Mom. The game just wore me out. I’m good.” I took a plate of pancakes and sat down to enjoy them. Abby was in her high chair, throwing food everywhere. I shoveled my food in my mouth—man, guys can eat a lot—and started cleaning up Abby’s mess.

“What are you doing? You need to get to school.” Jared’s mom stood right behind me, looking confused. Right. School.

“Just thought I’d help. Bye, Mom. See you after practice. I might hang out with, uh, Megan for a bit, though.” Wow, it sounded strange to say my own name in that context.

“Bye. Just make sure you get your homework done. You have scholarship paperwork that needs to be filled out, too.”

“Sounds good.” I hugged his mom again and ran out the door. I needed to get this worked out before I really messed things up.

It was late enough that I didn’t have time to pick up Jared from my house. I hoped things were going better for him.

Once at school, I took a deep breath and gave myself a pep talk before opening the door. Beth and Adam were talking by the drinking fountain, so I headed for them, but I was grabbed by the basketball team. I had never been more scared in my life. Normally, I could be myself and talk about anything with everyone’s eyes on me. But trying to be a guy in the same situation? Not good.

“Hey, guys.” I smiled and readjusted the backpack on my shoulder.

“Nice game last night, dude. Where’d you go afterward?” Michael asked.
